Supercell sales, earnings down in 2017

Clash Royale studio posts lowest numbers in three years, still brings in $810 million profit on more than $2 billion in revenue

The meteoric rise of Supercell has finally hit a bump. The Clash of Clans and Hay Day studio today reported its full-year financial earnings for 2017, revealing the lowest revenue and earnings numbers since 2014.

For the full-year, Supercell reported revenues down roughly 3% to $2.03 billion (€1.81 billion), with pre-tax earnings off 21% to $810 million (€729 million). Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen characterized it as "another good year in our journey," noting that two of its four officially launched games--Clash of Clans and Hay Day--are now five years old. A potential fifth game, Brawl Stars, was also launched into beta testing in Canada.

"Our headline numbers for the year are not as high as last year, as we did not release a new game globally," Paananen said. "Our vision is to create games for as many people as possible, that are played for years and remembered forever. That is obviously an insanely high bar to reach, and I'm proud that our teams don't compromise on that and only release games that are the very best for our players. This is how we continue to build Supercell for the long term!"

2017 also saw the company grow its headcount. Supercell employed 213 people at the end of 2016, and brought that up to 241 by the end of last year.
