Eve Online shooter Project Nova is not cancelled, it's just changing

CCP dedicates London studio to FPS concept, will no longer announce internal project codenames

Reports have emerged that Project Nova, the multiplayer shooter based on Eve Online, has been cancelled. However, this is not the case.

A statement released on Reddit explains that Project Nova is still in development -- it's just not called Project Nova anymore.

The studio said it is "continuing to develop our sci-fi multiplayer shooter game concept, actively evolving it beyond the original scope of what was formerly codenamed Project Nova."

The project is now the sole focus of CCP's London studio, while members of the Reykjavik team who were working on Nova have been moved on to other titles.

CCP said the gameplay experience it previously presented at an Eve event in 2018 "would not have achieved our ambitious goals for this concept" and added that "it is very common for games in active development to evolve over time, often substantially."

"We remain committed to offering a rock-solid, action-oriented gameplay experience with stellar visuals, but due to significant changes in the scope and direction of our sci-fi multiplayer shooter game concept, it also made sense to update how we refer to this project internally," the statement continued.

"So, we are no longer using the codename Project Nova for this game concept."

CCP added that it is now "moving away from publicly announcing our internal project codenames and will wait until we're ready for a full reveal."

"We want to show you rather than tell you how we have evolved this concept and we're looking forward to doing so when the time comes to present this concept as a fully-fledged game."

GamesIndustry.biz reached out to CCP for further clarification. The studio directed us back to the original statement.

Project Nova was originally announced in October 2017, and taken "back to the drawing board" a year later.

The studio has struggled with translating the success of Eve Online into a multiplayer shooter, having previously attempted this with free-to-play PS3 title Dust 514, which was closed back in 2016.
