EGX Berlin cancelled
Consumer games show will skip 2020 as Germany extends ban for major events
The organisers of EGX Berlin have announced this year's show has been cancelled.
The consumer games show was due to be held from October 30 to November 1.
The news follows a recent ban on major events in Germany, originally prohibiting all trade shows, sports and cultural events, and other gatherings with more than 5,000 attendees.
This ban was originally due to lift on August 31, but this has since been extended to October 24.
While the restrictions lift a week ahead of EGX Berlin's planned dates, the organisers have opted to cancel the event ahead of further disruption caused by COVID-19.
"In order to allow exhibitors and fans to better plan and to avoid a possible cancellation at short notice, we have made our decision now to not hold EGX Berlin this year," said business development manager Gregor Bischkopf.
"It is a pity that we have to suspend, but I believe that everyone understand that, despite the disappointment, we had no other choice in the current situation."
The ban on major events in Germany led this year's Gamescom to shift to an online-only structure, as have so many industry events and trade shows this year.
Other recent cancellations include Tokyo Game Show and Paris Games Week, although ChinaJoy is still due to go ahead as planned this July.
EGX Berlin is organised by the parent company of GamesIndustry.biz.
