Sonic The Hedgehog 2 movie expected to start production in March

Filming will be completed in May, project is codenamed 'Emerald Hill'

Production on the sequel to the Sonic The Hedgehog movie is reportedly due to begin in just a few months.

A listing on the Creative BC Film Commission website -- which handles movies shot in British Columbia, Canada -- shows that a production, codenamed 'Emerald Hill' is due to begin filming on March 15, 2021.

As all Sonic fans know, Emerald HIll is the name of the first zone in Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

Further evidence that this project is in fact the Sonic sequel can be found in the fact that the first movie's producers Neal H Moritz and Nan Morales, plus director Jeff Fowler, are all involved.

Production is expected to be completed by May 10. Of course, this schedule will depend on any impact from ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The first Sonic The Hedgehog movie, starring Jim Carrey and James Marsden, hit cinemas back in February.

It broke records for box office takings by a film based on a video game IP, generating $57 million in the US across its opening weekend. Previous record holder Detective Pikachu managed $54.3 million.

The movie went on to gross $210 million worldwide in its first ten days. The sequel was announced in May.

Famously, the original movie was delayed when the production team had to redesign Sonic himself. This followed widely negative reactions to the initial trailer.
