Halfbrick reportedly lays off more than half its staff

Fruit Ninja developer said to have dismissed up to 30 employees, with fewer than 30 remaining at the studio

Reports have emerged that Australian mobile developer Halfbrick has made more than half its team redundant.

CNET claims it has heard from multiple sources that up to 30 members of staff have been laid off, with fewer than this still working at the studio.

At one point, Halfbrick employed around 100 people worldwide, 70 of which were full-time staff at the firm's Brisbane headquarters.

Those that have remained are said to be solely focused on live operations for Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, the company's two biggest successes. While these games have fared well, with Fruit Ninja achieving more than one billion downloads to date, Halfbrick has struggled to follow this success.

The layoffs are reportedly part of a change in company strategy that will shift from developing new IP to building on these two brands.

It's unclear what this means for Raskulls Online, a multiplayer puzzle game that started accepting beta sign-ups a couple of weeks ago.

Halfbrick previously laid of its design staff back in 2015, and closed its Sydney satellite office a year later. The Spanish office seems to still be in operation, according to CNET.

GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to Halfbrick for clarification and comment.
