Gran Turismo 7 delayed to 2022

The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has slowed production of Sony's racing title

The release of Gran Turismo 7 has been pushed back to 2022.

As reported by GQ, the delay is due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has impacted the development schedule of Sony studio Polyphony Digital.

"GT7 has been impacted by COVID-related production challenges and therefore will shift from 2021 to 2022," a statement from Sony read.

"With the ongoing pandemic, it's a dynamic and changing situation and some critical aspects of game production have been slowed over the past several months. We'll share more specifics on GT7's release date when available."

Gran Turismo 7 was due to release this year as one of the flagship titles for the PlayStation 5, alongside Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Horizon Forbidden West.

The Gran Turismo franchise topped 80 million units sold back in 2018. The latest entry in the series was Gran Turismo Sport, which released on PS4 in 2017.

This announcement was shared alongside news that a "new VR format" is coming to PlayStation 5.
