Cuphead hits 5m sales in two years

Studio MDHR is celebrating the game's second birthday with discounts and giveaways on all platforms

Cuphead has now sold five million copies, two years after it first launched for PC and Xbox One.

The celebrated platformer has "officially gone five-times platinum," according to developer Studio MDHR, which is marking the game's second birthday with a week of discounts and giveaways.

Cuphead, which has an art style influenced by '30s animation, started as a Microsoft exclusive, only available on Windows PCs and Xbox One. Despite its relatively limited availability, it was an immediate hit, selling one million copies after two weeks on sale.

It reached two million units after two months, and this new milestone suggests it has continued to sell strongly ever since. During that period it has also launched on new platforms, including Nintendo Switch and, improbably, Tesla cars.

In July this year, it was announced that a Cuphead animated series was being made for Netflix.
