Sumo Group acquires Red Kite Games

Crackdown 3 developer brings work-for-hire studio into the fold

UK developer Red Kite Games has been acquired by the Sumo Group.

Under the deal, the studio will retain its name and its current staff of 27 developers but it will now be a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumo digital.

Red Kite is a work-for-hire studio based in West Yorkshire that has supported engineering and code support on a myriad of titles -- many of which it has collaborated on with Sumo Digital.

Its work includes the likes of Dirt 4, God of War III: Remastered and mobile Call of Duty outing Strike Team. It has also been developing its own IP, Hollowpoint, which it discussed with back in 2017.

This acquisition is the latest in a series of purchases for Sumo, having picked up CCP Games Newcastle in January 2018, followed by The Chinese Room in August.

"We are very much looking forward to being part of Sumo Group," said Red Kite founder Simon Iwaniszak. "Sumo Digital is such an exciting business, working on incredible projects. Being part of a creative, ambitious and supportive Group, which is delivering great results, will present new opportunities and new challenges to Red Kite. We have exciting plans for the studio and believe that Sumo Group will help us achieve our full potential."

Sumo Group CEO Carl Cavers added: "Red Kite is an established brand with talented people, providing engineering and code support services to some of the biggest names in the industry. Simon and his team are already well known to us and we are confident that Red Kite will integrate quickly and successfully. On behalf of the whole Group, I extend a warm welcome."

Sumo Digital is currently working on Crackdown 3, due on February 15, and Team Sonic Racing, which will arrive in the summer.
