Nintendo to open museum in Japan

Dedicated to the platform holder's "development history and philosophy," the Nintendo Gallery is expected for 2024

Nintendo has announced plans to open a museum dedicated to its history, in Uji, a city on the outskirts of Kyoto, Japan.

The project, presented under the tentative name "Nintendo Gallery," is expected to be completed during the company's 2023 fiscal year, ending March 2024.

The gallery will be established in Nintendo's Uji Ogura Plant, which will be fully renovated to accommodate for its new function.

Initially built in 1969, the factory was originally used to manufacture playing cards and was also a customer service center for product repairs. It stopped operating in 2016.

In its announcement, Nintendo says the museum aims at sharing "Nintendo's product development history and philosophy with the public."

Nintendo recently opened its theme park, Super Nintendo World, as part of Universal Studios Japan. It finally opened in March after several delays due to COVID-19, but was shut down again soon after as the Osaka prefecture declared a state of emergency due to cases spiking.
