Crystal Dynamics opens Austin studio

Crystal Southwest will be a "major part of all current and future Crystal Dynamics titles"

Crystal Dynamics has announced the opening of a new development studio, based in Austin, Texas.

Called Crystal Southwest, it'll be a "major part of all current and future Crystal Dynamics titles," the company said on Twitter.

The new studio will be led by industry veteran Dallas Dickinson, currently executive producer at the firm, and previously CEO of QC Games, director of production at BioWare, and senior producer at Sony.

A core team of "Crystal Dynamics veterans" has already started work at the new studio, the announcement added, though it did not clarify what they were working on.

Crystal Dynamics' latest game, Marvel's Avengers, launched last year to lukewarm reviews, but the title still found an audience. It was the best selling title in the US on its launch month, and remained at the top of the UK charts two weeks in a row.

However, publisher Square Enix confirmed in its financial results that Avengers missed its expectations. Crystal Dynamics ended up delaying the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions of the title to address issues in the game.
