Australian games industry revenue has doubled to $160.9m since 2016

Revenue generated by games from Australian studios rose 23% since last year

The Australian games industry has doubled its revenue in the past five years, reaching AU$226.5 million ($160.9 million) in 2021.

That's a 23% growth compared to last year, with the Australian industry growing 20% every year for the past three years.

That's according to the annual survey from the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association, which added that employment in the Australian industry grew 7% year-on-year.

There were 1,327 full time employees (or equivalent) across 187 Australian game studios in 2021, with 64% of these studios planning to hire in 2022.

It's worth mentioning that the actual number may be higher, with the IGEA saying that they contacted over 400 studios for their survey, with 187 being the number of companies completing it.

The state of Victoria is home to a majority of the Australian industry -- 44% of its studios, and 57% of its full time employees. It's followed by New South Wales (18% of the studios, and 13% of full time employees) and Queensland (17% of the studios, 10% of the full time employees).

Looking at diversity figures, 67% of the full time employees of the Australian industry are cisgender men. 23% are cisgender women and 10% are transgender, non-binary or gender diverse.

The Australian industry is still young, with 45% of studios five years old or less, 24% between six and ten years old, and 21% ten years old or more.
