EA confirms 50 games going offline

Publisher details casualties of GameSpy shutdown, looks at community-supported solutions for most popular titles

Electronic Arts has confirmed dozens of games that will be losing online functionality with the impending shutdown of GameSpy's hosted services. The publisher said Friday it has been evaluating options to preserve those features, but hasn't come up with a solution as of yet.

The affected games include a wide selection of Wii and DS games (both systems built their online services around GameSpy technology), and about two dozen PC titles. While this is the end of the line for most of these games' online communities, a select few may yet be preserved.

"We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games," the publisher said in a statement. "We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don't have anything to announce."

GameSpy has said it would be shutting down all of its hosted services effective May 31. However, EA is telling consumers that its GameSpy-powered titles would lose their functionality on June 30. A full list of affected games is available on EA's official site.

At what point will Steamworks be the only viable multiplayer server system? Devs/pubs won't want to risk the bad PR and loss of income that comes from other services shutting down, and at least Steam is a sure-thing for the life of any PC game currently out and soon to be released.

G4WL. GameSpy. Quazal. All of it lost income for devs, whether it be from patching or leaving games in the dust.

This is why I like my single player offline games. True Ill give 1 maybe 3 games a shot. But my video game library, which is pretty big, is made up of games i can enjoy offline. Because it sucks to pay for a product, which then becomes rendered useless, when the developer or publisher feels like pulling the plug.

I never bought the notion that online was the future. Same with cloud gaming. its nice on paper. But at the end of the day, servers cost money to maintain, and keep running. They cost is so much I doubt a small company can keep them going for long.

Rick said much of what I was going to say, but I'll say more. EVERY game made needs some means of offline play if not for preservation's sake, at LEAST so someone can actually play all that hard work. With more and more games going download and online only or download only with no physical versions, much of current and future game history is going to be a total bitch to keep track of once people stop giving a crap about it...
