38 Studios' Rhode Island deal nears completion

New premises chosen for Kingdom Of Amalur dev's controversial relocation

38 Studios, the developer created by former baseball player Curt Schilling, has confirmed its new premises in downtown Providence, Rhode Island.

The studio has attracted ire from local politicians and fellow developers in its home state of Massachusetts, due to its decision to up sticks in return for a potential $75 million loan from Rhode Island.

Part of this agreement required signing a ten year lease on premises in the state by the end of November.

The announcement of the new six-storey, 100,000-square-foot office in Providence's Empire Plaza would appear to put an end to calls for the Kingdom Of Amalur: Reckoning and Copernicus dev to remain in the Boston area.

Both states have predicted the studio's potential to attract jobs, with Rhode Island promising $64 million of the loan if Schilling's outfit hires 250 staff by the end of next year.

38 Studios also owns the remnants of former THQ studio Big Huge Games, following the departure of its co-founder Brian Reynolds to Zynga in 2009.
