Worldwide digital spending up 15% in June - Superdata

PUBG bolstered by Steam sale with second-best month of all time by unit sales

June was a busy month for PC gaming with the Steam summer sale. But despite multiple sales milestones on PC for games like PUBG, The Crew 2, and The Sims 4, revenue on the platform last month declined slightly as mobile and console revenue rose, according to the monthly Superdata report.

Worldwide digital spending was up 15% year over year for June, with a total of $9.1 billion spent digitally on all platforms. Mobile and console revenue were up 23% year-over-year, but premium PC and social revenue were marginally lower.

The lower PC revenue is a bit surprising considering how many PC games did well in June. The Steam summer sale gave PUBG a helping hand to sell 4.7 million units last month, its second best month of all-time (its best was October of last year). That said, its sale price of $19.99 (compared to $29.99) made it work harder for the revenue.

The Crew 2 and The Sims 4 also had solid Junes. The former sold 700,000 digital units across PC and console, and an estimated 800,000 PC players purchased the new "Seasons" expansion for the latter.

Finally, Call of Duty: WWII caught up at last and passed Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's revenue over the same period of time since launch, though the game is still behind where Black Ops III was at a comparable time.

All else held fairly steady from previous months, with Fortnite sitting cozily at the top of console revenue rankings but staying off the mobile rankings entirely. It's possible that could change come July, though, as daily mobile revenue from the game reached an all-time high of $3 million a few weeks ago.
