Video game sales fall at Sega Sammy

Overall company profits up 105%; Sonic Colors sells 2.1m, Vanquish 830k

Sega Sammy has posted profits of ¥41.5 billion ($515.5m / £316.5m) for the full financial year, up 105 per cent on the previous year.

Sales were at ¥396.7 billion ($4.9bn / £3bn) for the year, a marginal increase of 3.1 per cent.

Sega Sammy's Pachislot and Pachinko Machines, Amusement Machines and Amusement Centre businesses performed positively, but sales in the consumer business - video games and toys - were down 26.5 per cent to ¥89.5 billion ($1.1bn / £681.7m) and operating profit down 69 per cent to ¥1.9 billion ($24.4 / £14.9m).

The company noted weak console sales in the US and Europe, as well as continued disruption from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami during the year, resulting in lower software unit sales.

In total, Sega sold 18.7 million console and PC games globally, of which approximately 7.8 million were in the US, 8.2 million in Europe and 2.6 million in Japan and other regions.

Nintendo DS and Wii game Sonic Colors sold 2.1 million units during the period, while multiformat movie tie-in Iron Man 2 shifted 1.5 million units.

New IP Vanquish sold 830,000 units during the year and Shogun 2: Total War 600,000 units

For the new financial year, Sega expects to sell 23.2 million games combined worldwide, and also noted the release of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games as significant.
