Suda51: What matters is the game, not the platform

Goichi Suda praises the growth of indie development

In his latest interview Goichi Suda has argued it is too soon to judge the new PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as platforms, and argued that in any case, it's the games that are the most important thing.

"I guess what's more important is the video game itself and not the platform it's on, and I think it's really important to be able to have the chance to play all kinds of different games - not just mega AAA titles but indie games too," he said when asked to evaluate the new consoles by Expansive DLC.

"You know, indie games are not necessarily poorly made, I think nowadays we are shifting towards the era where you get to play all kinds of different games of different sizes - but they are all equally as good."

During the interview he also suggested that new developers should focus on building a portfolio of skills.

"If you think about it, a writer .. they don't really produce or create anything physical so I guess having a skill is good, so you can create something physical," he explained.

"The important thing is to contribute to the project and you know, how much you can contribute to the product. Having different skills are really good, I didn't necessarily even have to write at the beginning but no one was writing so - I started writing. I also worked on designing some parts and so forth, so being able to contribute to a project with multiple skills is really good."

Goichi Suda, also known by his nickname Suda51, is the creator of cult titles Killer 7 and No More Heroes, but recently has focused on creating games for Nintendo platforms.

Earlier this year he spoke to GamesIndustry International about the portrayals of sex and gender in his games.

"Sexuality is a touchy subject. We don't want to make people offended, but we're trying to create something that makes people laugh a bit because we're [dealing with] that topic."
