Sony claims 3.8m PS3 sales over Christmas period

3D Stereoscopic gaming and Motion Controller both set for 2010

Sony Computer Entertainment has estimated it sold over 3.8 million PlayStation units during the five weeks of the Christmas period 2009.

That's a 76 per cent increase in hardware sales over last year, and the highest record sales for the PS3 during a Christmas period, according to Sony.

As of January 3 2010, the PlayStation Network has over 38 million accounts via the PS3, PC and PSP. The company also confirmed that 3D stereoscopic gaming would be introduced to the PlayStation 3 system this year through a firmware upgrade.

2010 will also see the release of the company's Motion Controller (not the final name, according to Sony), but the company did not go as far as Microsoft by announcing a launch window for the system.
