Shutter Island

Mercom doing a casual game based on the upcoming Martin Scorsese movie.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHAPEL HILL, NC and SEATTLE, WA – July 21, 2009 – Merscom announced today at the Casual Connect conference in Seattle that it is developing and publishing Shutter Island, a casual game based on the upcoming feature film “Shutter Island” by Paramount Pictures. Merscom will publish the game with Paramount Digital Entertainment on October 2, 2009 in conjunction with the film’s theatrical release.

From Oscar®-winning director Martin Scorsese, “Shutter Island” tells the story of two U.S. Marshals, Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the coast of Massachusetts in 1954 to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from Ashecliffe, the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.

The Shutter Island game is a hidden objects game where players will take on the role of a U.S. Marshal as they attempt to locate patients that have escaped Ashecliffe during a recent hurricane. The game will consist of 7 levels and 20 environments. In addition, there will be multiple mini-games that move the player through Ashecliffe, creating unique interactions with characters from the film.

The game builds on Merscom’s experience in creating successful commercial casual games based on major media properties. Merscom’s joint productions with Lifetime Network’s Blood Ties and with Starz Media’s Righteous Kill were two of the most successful hidden object games of 2008, each title not only popular with fans of the properties but also the broader casual games market.

“Shutter Island represents a great opportunity to bring a property that will already be leveraged over multiple media, particularly books and film, to the casual game market,” said Lloyd Melnick, Chief Customer Officer at Merscom. “Launching the game just prior to the theatrical premiere will help the game benefit from the strong marketing for the film, and at the same time introduce gamers to this thrilling movie.”

“The plot of the ‘Shutter Island’ film lends itself very well to a hidden object casual video game,” said John Kavanagh, senior vice president of video games for Paramount Digital Entertainment. “We look forward to bringing Shutter Island to casual gamers and fans of the film this Fall.”
