Psyonix disapproves of Rocket League gambling

Developer speaks out after betting platform Unikrn adds its hit title to line-up

The team behind Rocket League has expressed it disapproval of a company using it as a subject on online gambling.

Unikrn, an platform that allows consumers to bet real-world money on competitive video games matches, announced this week that it had added the popular car-based sports game to its line-up for Australian users.

The firm said Rocket League had been approved by Australia's regulators, although it has yet to announce whether the same applies to the UK - the only other territory in which Unikrn supports real-money betting.

However, Psyonix told GameSpot that is does not approve of this use for its game, with publishing VP Jeremy Dunham stressing: "Psyonix is not affilated with Unikrn, nor do we support or endorse online betting for our game."

Unikrn CEO Rahul Sood has since responded, clarifying that the platform is "not in any way associated with the publishers of Rocket League". He added: "However, we love the game, and like other titles on our sportsbook, we create odds and content on the pro matches and their top-tier tournaments."

Rocket League has become something of a hit in the eSports space, and is arguably one of the more accessible titles for both players and viewers when it comes to competitive gaming. However, as any sport takes off it will inevitably attract the attention of gamblers. While Psyonix has been quick to make its stance on betting known, it's unclear whether the studio will be able to stop Unikrn or other platforms from allowing people to gamble on Rocket League matches.
