Partnerships help to compete in MMO space - 38 Studios

Start-up developer says it's not deterred by competing with established companies' financial clout

Brett Close, CEO of 38 Studios, has said that strategic partnerships will allow the developer to compete with much larger companies in the MMO space.

Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Close explained how even though the company didn't have the financial clout of EA or Activision Blizzard, it could still handle their debut project with the aid of partners.

"What we're focusing on is building the game," Close explained. "There are things that we don't want to get caught up in."

"There are a number of areas that frankly we don't have any business being involved in and we're not going to and we will find partners that will help us with that. We have a number of conversations in play with very interesting partners who can help us."

The company's founder, Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, said that it was the company's own internal rigour that posed the biggest challenge.

"For the next two years until we launch our game we're competing with ourselves," Schilling said. "We have to deliver internally and meet internal expectations. If you're a company with any kind of long-term vision, the barriers, the goals, the hurdles you have to overcome are far more significant internally than they'll ever be externally."
