More R&D

Games developers should be claiming more R&D tax credits was the message delivered by speakers from the Treasury and HM Revenue and Customs at the recent TIGA Tax credits seminar held at SJ Berwins.

The speakers said that the new specialist units (covering the all claims by small and medium-sized businesses, including games developers) based in Croydon, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leicester, Maidstone, Manchester and Southampton would help deliver more consistent and certain claims and that games companies could be more confident in making claims and could consult the new specialist inspectors before they made their claims, if in doubt.

Newly elected Chairman of the Tiga Technology Group Fred Gill of Swordfish Studios, will speak at a conference of tax inspectors with Tiga CEO Fred Hasson in October on how games are built and what R&D goes into a project.

The content of the seminar will be written into the 3rd Edition of the Tiga Best Practice Handbook for early next year and will be featured in the Tiga Best Practice Roadshow in April/May 2008.

The Tiga Technology Group has 4 objectives:

i) provide more dialogue between developers and technology-middleware suppliers to increase collaborations and business

ii) look outside the games industry to improve techniques and know-how

iii) work with government to review and define concepts of R&D in the games industry

iv) feed into the newly created Creative Industries Knowledge Transfer Network
