God of War scores fourth consecutive No.1 in UK boxed charts

Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze retains second spot

For the fourth consecutive week in a row, God of War is No.1 (despite a 30% dip in sales week-on-week).

It means that the game has surpassed The Last of Us: Remastered as the Sony-published PS4 game with the most consecutive No.1s. It's quite a specific feat, admittedly, and it's not exactly faced any real competition. But the game has been quite a sizeable hit for Sony, and it's comfortably the second biggest new game released this year behind Far Cry 5.

All of this is for physical game sales only.

If it secures two more No.1s in a row, it will have surpassed The Last of Us on PS3's six-week run at the top spot. Although it faces a bit of competition over the coming weeks, such as from Hyrule Warriors on Nintendo Switch, the remastered versions of Dark Souls and another PS4 exclusive in the form of Detroit: Become Human.

What's worth calling out is the No.2 game of the week: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It's the second week in a row it holds this position after suffering a slight 32% drop in sales - that's a good result for a game in its second week, and especially for a port of a title first released back in February 2014 on Wii U. Despite only being on shelves for two weeks, the Switch version accounts for a quarter of all copies sold so far in the UK.

Tropical Freeze has already sold more copies than both Nintendo Labo products combined. Nintendo will be hoping Labo can find itself an audience over time, but it's not started too well. The Variety Pack has dropped to No.27 in the charts, with the Robot pack completely absent from the Top 40 (it's at No.14 in the Switch-only charts).

As you can probably tell, it's a quiet week for boxed video games once again. The only new title in the charts is at No.13 - Conan Exiles by Deep Silver.

GTA V, after daring to drop out of the Top Ten last week, is back at No.9 (with a 7% sales increase), while Assassin's Creed Origins is the biggest riser, up 75% in sales to No.8. The game had fallen to No.33 just two weeks ago (although its sales had been very strong up until that point).

Destiny 2 also makes returns to the Top Ten at No.10 with a 36% sales improvement.

There are ten platform exclusive games in the Top 20, which just goes to show that multi-platform isn't the only way to go.

Here is the UKIE/GfK Top 10 for the week ending May 12th.
