Digital Domain expands into videogames
Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean effects company opens new studio in Florida
Visual effects studio Digital Domain is to move into videogames as it opens a new facility in Florida.
Funded with $40 million in grants and $50 million from parent company Wyndcrest Holdings, the new studio will specialise in videogames, animation and military simulation. Digital Domain already has studios in LA and Vancouver.
"We can do that now in Florida and keep Vancouver and California focused on feature film visual effects," said Cliff Plumer, CEO of the company, to Variety.
Digital Domain has won multiple Oscar and BAFTA awards, and has worked on movies such as Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
The incentive package from Florida requires Digital Domain Florida to recruit at least 500 employees in four years, with an average salary of $65,000.
Digital Domain isn't the only visual effects company eyeing the videogame market – Framestore told GamesIndustry.biz today that the games business offers an "exciting new direction" for the company.
