Call of Duty mobile game in works for China

Activision and Tencent working on free-to-play first-person action game to debut in coming months; Timi tapped to develop game

Call of Duty is opening up another front in its battle for Chinese gamers. Activision today announced a partnership with Tencent to launch a Call of Duty mobile game in China.

The Chinese Call of Duty game will be a free-to-play first-person action game "bringing together a collection of beloved Call of Duty characters, maps, modes and weapons from across the franchise."

Tencent's Timi studio is heading up development on the project, which is expected to launch "in the coming months." Timi is best known as the studio behind the Chinese mobile version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, PUBG: Army Attack. (The version of PUBG Mobile available in the West was developed by Lightspeed & Quantum Studios.) The Timi project appears to be unrelated to the Call of Duty mobile game revealed to be in the works at Candy Crush maker King last year.

Tencent and Activision previously teamed up for Call of Duty Online, a free-to-play PC shooter for the Chinese market, which has been running since 2015.
