The move to a larger capacity venue marks the awards' growth and importance to the industry, according to the BAFTA execs.

"We needed to find somewhere which gave us room to expand, because the Academy's long term commitment is to make these awards the global kitemark of games excellence," offered Anne-Marie Flynn, head of awards at BAFTA.

"Last year we mounted the most highly attended Awards in the industry and this year will be even bigger. We are very excited about putting on a really visually arresting Awards show in 2007."

Last year's big winner at the British Academy Videogame Awards was Ubisoft's PC and Xbox 360 title Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, which picked up two trophies at the prestigious event.

"In a very short space of time, an Academy Videogames Award — which recognises excellence in the fastest-growing form of entertainment — has become the most coveted in the industry," commented Paul Jackson, chair of the Academy's Games Committee.
