Super Mario 3D All-Stars beats Avengers to No.1 | UK Charts

Nintendo's compilation celebrating Mario's 35th anniversary is the third biggest launch of the year in the UK

After two weeks at the top of the UK charts, the Avengers have been knocked down by another superhero: Mario, as Super Mario 3D All-Stars shot straight to No.1.

Nintendo's bundle featuring HD ports of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy for Switch is the third biggest game launch of the year in the UK, after Sony's The Last of Us: Part II and another Nintendo staple, Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

According to GfK, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is the fifth fastest selling Switch game ever in the UK, after Pokémon Sword/Shield, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and Super Mario Odyssey. It's also the 15th biggest Nintendo game launch of all time, sitting just behind Odyssey.

Looking at all the physical games featuring Mario that have launched in the UK, only Mario Kart Wii, Smash Bros Ultimate and Odyssey were bigger than 3D All-Stars.

Square Enix's Marvel's Avengers had to settle for No.2, with sales decreasing 46% week-on-week, and Animal Crossing remained at No.3 for a second week, with sales only dropping 5%. It was overall a very strong week for Nintendo, as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remained at No.5 for the third consecutive week, even getting a 9% boost in sales this time around.

Meanwhile, after two weeks at No.2 since its launch mid-August, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 fell to No.4 with sales decreasing 54% week-on-week.

There also were two new entries in the UK charts this week: 2K's WWE 2K Battlegrounds at No.6 and eFootball PES 2021 Season Update at No.9, as Konami decided earlier this year to scale back this year's PES entry.

Overall, it's been a good week at retail, with unit sales going up 33% and revenue taking a healthy 49% boost week-on-week. The market's value was up 11.1% compared to the same period last year.

Here is the GfK Top Ten for the week ending September 19th:
