1979 Revolution: Black Friday wins Facebook Game of the Year

AdVenture Capitalist, June's Journey and Star Wars: Commander also among winners

Facebook has announced the winners of its Game of the Year awards, with acclaimed indie title 1979 Revolution: Black Friday taking the top honour.

The game is based on true stories from the Iranian Revolution of the late 1970s/early 1980s, allowing players to explore these events - and both sides of the conflict - as a photojournalist.

1979 Revolution was developed by Ink Stories and won the Best Gameroom Game category, beating off titles such as The Eyes of Ara, Beholder, Rise of Balloons and Heart's Medicine. The judges also deemed it best game overall, naming it Facebook's Game of the Year 2017.

Elsewhere, Disney's Star Wars: Commander won Best Free-To-Play Gameroom Game. This desktop version gives players more screen space that the smartphone and tablet title that was first released in 2014.

Wooga won Best Web Game with its hidden object title June's Journey, a browser-based mystery and romance adventure set in the 1920s. Finally, Hyper Hippo Productions' popular AdVenture Capitalist took Best Instant Game.

You can find out more about the winners over at Facebook's developer blog.

Facebook continues to push Instant Games and Gameroom as key platforms for mobile and PC developers to offset the decline in browser-based gaming, and last year told GamesIndustry.biz that it has big plans for the world of esports.
