Former GAME MD and Gamestation boss back at troubled retail group

Former GAME managing director Martyn Gibbs is returning to the retailer as chief executive.

Gibbs left the company in 2011 after holding the MD position from 2010 and before that was in senior positions at Gamestation.

He will be joined by David Hamid as chairman. Hamid's retail background includes CEO of Halfords and serving on the board of Dixons.

"I am delighted to be leading GAME back to success," said Gibbs. "Our immediate priority is to help the GAME and Gamestation teams, so they can give our customers a great Easter in our stores and websites."

GAME's UK business was bought out of administration yesterday by Baker Acquisitions, saving 333 stores and safeguarding almost 3,200 jobs.

Well, the more things change, the more they stay the same, huh?

I didn't hold out a lot of hope for Game before this. Now I have less.

Still, not my money they're wasting.

I'm not sure you're right on this one actually. Martyn was a key part of the successful Gamestation team and is well respected by suppliers. His time in the hot seat at GAME was brief. Possibly the best appointment they could have made - it was a mistake that he went in the first place.

A few things I would implement:

a) Stop charging above 40 in-store for new releases.
b) Make a general knowledge and or/personal interest in games a requirement for all employees.
c) Build bridges with publishers/suppliers and stop placing so much onus on pre-owned. Perhaps lower the price offered for pre-owned units, and, for instance, offering to buy back games within 14 days for 38 (from a 43 initial sale) seems like commercial suicide - particularly when game prices drop so fast online with the likes of Zavvi. Perhaps approach publishers like EA and Sony to run in-store Online Pass promotions.
d) In-shop demo units for all stores where possible. All the better if it's something like Kinect Star Wars or Grand Slam Tennis 2, where people can actually experience the game and have a laugh with friends.
e) I hope the staff cull and website downtime hasn't affected its efficiency - Game.co.uk has always offered a very good service, and was one of my preferred sites when they had good prices.

There are, I think, two major problems with offering demos in store. The first is they can be expensive to set up, what with demo units, etc. The second is they're often used permanently by kids, who go in there with nothing else to do. So they're a bit wasted that way.

As a former Game Station employee I can attest to this. You end up with them being used mostly by the same few folks all day.

It's also impractical in terms of what do you pick to demo because a lot of the big games are age restricted so you can't have demo's of them running because kids that aren't old enough could play them.

I'm kind of glad to hear about this. While I don't use the shop a lot they do provide a great service (at least the ones I've been to and worked in) in terms of customer service. You can't really walk in to ASDA or Tesco as a non gamer and ask the staff for advice because most of them are not gamers.
