War Z renamed Infestation: Survivor Stories

Copyright issues find the zombie MMO with a new name

The War Z, the controversial game that was removed from Steam only to return six months later, has been renamed as Infestation: Survivor Stories. The game's trademark was suspended shortly after it was pulled from Steam, due to a conflict with trademarks filed by Paramount Pictures for the World War Z film. OP Productions was unable to resolve the issue, so The War Z is no more.

The newly-minted Infestation has nearly 1 million registered players since its October 2012 launch.

Steam and trademarks aren't the only things standing in Infestation's way. Dean Hall, the creator of the Arma II mod DayZ, was angry about the War Z for riding the wave of DayZ's success.

"I am angry about the WarZ. I'm very angry. I'm quite hurt personally because anyone can see how similar the words are, and while the average gamer knows the difference individual people don't. I really don't think anyone can understand just quite how exasperated that can make you feel when you've gambled everything on something, put your whole self and reputation on the line. So it hasn't made my life very pleasant and I disagree entirely with the conduct and how consumers have been treated," said Hall in a post on Reddit on January.

Hall is currently working on a DayZ standalone title for Arma II developer Bohemia Interactive.
