Switch "could possibly eclipse" Wii - GameStop

Specialty retailer rep says Nintendo's latest has phenomenal start, soaring attach rates for games and accessories

The Wii is Nintendo's best-selling home console ever, but the newly released Switch has a chance to change that, according to one retailer. Speaking with Game Rant, GameStop senior director of merchandising Eric Bright said the Switch could eventually best even the Wii and its installed base of 101 million.

"The Nintendo Switch is off to a start right now that it could possibly eclipse the Wii," Bright said. "Initial sales on this have been phenomenal. I can't give straight numbers, but I can say we're seeing one of the highest attach rates of software and accessories to a device that we've seen in a long time."

Bright said extra JoyCon controllers and power chargers were proving to be the most popular accessory pick-ups at launch. As for software, his suggestion that Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the most popular title of launch--GameStop is prepping its own hardware bundles featuring the game to sell online--should come as no surprise.

Last week, research firm Superdata projected that the Switch had sold 1.5 million systems, with 89% of purchasers also picking up a copy of Zelda to go with it. Initial demand for the system has apparently surprised even Nintendo, as the company reportedly ramped up production on the console, now expecting to ship 16 million Switches in the next year instead of 8 million.
