Sony expects games business to edge towards profit

Reduction in manufacturing costs to play a crucial part in the next financial year

Sony Corporation has revealed that it expects to see its videogames unit report an operating profit in the next financial year as a result of reduced manufacturing costs and higher software sales for its PlayStation 3 console.

"Despite an expected decrease in game segment sales as a result of a decline in sales for the PlayStation 2 business, the game segment as a whole is expected to have positive operating income for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009 as the profitability of the segment will improve significantly due to hardware cost reductions and an enhanced line-up of software titles in the PS3 business."

The unit narrowed its losses from JPY 232.3 billion (USD 2.21 billion) to JPY 124.5 billion (USD 1.18 billion) to the year ending March 31, 2008.

Operating income is a company's income before deducting taxes.
