Sony announces PS3 surround sound system

PSP compatible single speaker system to launch this autumn at sub-£200 price tag

Sony has announced a new all-in-one surround sound system specifically designed for the PlayStation 3 and due to go on sale this autumn.

Although not mentioned at Sony's pre-E3 conference the "Surround Sound System for PlayStation 3" device will retail for $199/€199 (£165).

The device uses Sony's S-Force PRO Front Surround Sound to generate high quality sound from just one centrally placed speaker, with no separate subwoofer.

The system features an optical audio input for connecting directly to the PlayStation 3 and analogue audio input for connecting to portable devices such as the PSP. The form factor is designed to match the PlayStation aesthetic while requiring less space than a traditional home theatre system.

The device supports Dolby digital, DTS, MPEG-2 AAC and Linear PCM audio formats, and measures approximately 720 mm x 85mm x 87mm.
