Rovio to open Toronto studio

Angry Birds developer's new office location to be led by ex-Gameloft VP of North American Studios Julie Beaugrand

Today mobile game publisher Rovio announced that it will open a new studio in Toronto.

Rovio said that its Toronto team will focus on free-to-play casual mobile games while also expanding the company's offerings from its existing studios.

Additionally, Rovio has hired Julie Beaugrand to be Rovio Toronto's head of studio and vice president. Previously she was Gameloft Toronto's head of studio and Gameloft's VP of North American studios.

"With Julie's direction, we can build a world-class team that furthers Rovio's expertise in free-to-play casual mobile games, increasing our bandwidth to reach casual audiences," said Rovio CEO Alexandre Pelletier-Normand.

"Creating new teams with strong studio heads and core teams is part of our growth strategy."

The Toronto location will be Rovio's second in Canada; it opened the first in Montreal last year.
