Ragnar Tørnquist: Dreamfall sequel will be crowd-funded

First project from Red Thread Games will get Kickstarter campaign after pre-production

Ragnar Tørnquist will use crowd-funding to aid development of his latest project: a sequel to the classic adventure games The Longest Journey and Dreamfall.

In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Tørnquist detailed his plans for Dreamfall Chapters, the first project from his new studio Red Thread Games. The studio has secured a grant from the Norwegian Film Institute that will fund pre-production, but beyond that Tørnquist plans to call on aid from the crowd.

"We will be doing a Kickstarter," he said. "Not right now, but we will be doing it in the near future... In order to fully develop Dreamfall Chapters we're going to need more money and we will be going to Kickstarter."

While Tørnquist is still contributing to The Secret World as its creative director, Red Thread Games is completely separate from Funcom. Dreamfall Chapters is subject to a licensing agreement and revenue share with Funcom, but funding and development will be carried out independently.

"I'll still be contributing a lot to the story side [of The Secret World], advising Joel [Bylos] and the team," Tørnquist continued. "I'm working on the master story document at the moment, making sure all the threads are coming together and we know where we're at. I want to make sure the team are as independent as possible but I have no plans to leave.

"The Secret World is very dear to me and I plan to stay on as long as possible."
