PS4 preorders halted at GameStop

Specialty retailer cuts off reservations citing high demand; rival chains still offering launch-day systems

Anyone intending to pick up a PlayStation 4 when it launches later this year may want to firm up their plans for it now. As reported by Game Informer, GameStop has stopped taking preorders for the system.

"Due to high demand for the system, GameStop is not currently taking additional store reservations for the PlayStation 4," the specialty retailer said in a statement.

Customers interested in the PS4 can add their names to a notification list and receive an email when GameStop resumes orders on the system. The GameStop site is also prominently pushing Xbox One preorders, which remain available in a variety of configurations.

GameStop is not the first major retailer to lock down PS4 preorders in the US. Toys R Us has also pre-sold out of PS4s, although the retailer says it will open reservations back up soon. Amazon continues to offer PS4 preorders, but will only promise delivery at launch if customers buy a bundle including software as well. Other retailers including Best Buy and Walmart are still selling unbundled lauch-day preorders for the console.
