PlayStation Move sells 4.1m worldwide

Update: Sony clarifies number shipped to retailers not sold to consumers

Sony Computer Entertainment has sold over 4.1 million units of its Move peripheral worldwide since release in September.

The motion controller is supported by 25 titles in Europe, including new releases such as Sports Champions and Start the Party, and retro-fitted releases like acclaimed thriller Heavy Rain.

"The milestone was reached in just two months since its release in September for North America, Europe/PAL territories and Asia, and 1 month since the release in October for Japan," said Sony in a statement.

"The number not only shows clear success of the launch of the new motion sensing controller but also indicates positive momentum going in to the holiday season and to the year 2011."

The 4.1 million figure does not include stand alone sales of the Navigation controller or the PlayStation Eye camera, which is required to use the Move wands.

As of September, sales of the PlayStation 3 console were 41.6 million units.

Microsoft said last night that it has sold over 2.5 million Kinect units in 25 days since launch.

Update: Although Sony's European press release states 4.1 million units have been "sold", a representative for the company has clarified to Joystiq that the figure is units shipped to retailers.
