Nvidia launches VR friendly laptops
GeForce GTX 980 GPU loaded machines meet Oculus Rift specs
Nvidia is releasing a range of virtual reality friendly laptops that it says will exceed the performance requirements set by Oculus Rift earlier this year. The GeForce GTX 980 Notebooks will go on sale in November.
For those who like hardware details, the laptops are equipped with a 2,048-core GM204 (found in GeForce GTX 980 graphics cards), GDDR5 memory, multiple USB 3.0 ports and a direct HDMI out. Oculus tweeted its support for the range today.
"The GTX 980 notebook includes a fully loaded GTX 980 GPU in a laptop form factor. It's a great platform for utilizing Unreal Engine 4's high-end features, such as physically based shading, DirectX 12 and virtual reality device support," said Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games.
If nothing else the arrival of VR compatible laptops will make the medium more portable than it has been previously, allowing gamers to share the experience with their friends and developers to travel to trade shows without the risk of backache.
"The GeForce GTX 980 notebook is a very impressive piece of hardware. EVE: Valkyrie runs super smooth on it with rock-solid performance," added CCP's Owen O'Brien.
