NES Classic Edition returns to stores in June
Along with the SNES Classic, systems will remain in stores through the end of the year
The NES Classic Edition will once again be available for purchase in stores on June 29. Both it and the SNES Classic Edition will remain in stores through the end of the year.
This announcement comes as a follow-up after Nintendo stated in its third-quarter financial briefing that it would resume production on the NES Classic Edition. Nintendo initially stopped production of the console in April of 2017.
During the NES Classic's first run, Nintendo sold 2.3 million units. In an interview with GameSpot, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime admitted that Nintendo had underestimated the demand for the console, which sold out both online and in stores almost immediately every time a new shipment came in.
The NES Classic Edition is a plug-and-play console that includes 30 NES games built-in and costs $60. Both it and the SNES Classic Edition are likely to become the simplest ways to reliably access their lineups of classic Nintendo games as the company eschews its Virtual Console concept in favor of a subscription-based online service.
