London MCM Expo 2008

Cosplay allowed and, indeed, encouraged at next month's event.

From Jedi’s to Ninja, the London MCM Expo has the lot thanks to the myriad of fans that flock each year suited and booted in the outfits of their heroes from film, television, video games and comic books, manga and anime.

This October’s expo presents more photo opportunities, more big hair, more weaponry, more flamboyant and outrageous costumes and more prizes for the best dressed.

For those looking to further their tailoring skills, swap fashion tips and get those last minute repairs taken care of there’s the Cosplay Point, run by friendly staff ready to handle all cosplay-related questions, check that weaponry is suitable and offer changing rooms and storage space for those not looking forward to tackling the streets of London as an Orc or Fairy Ninja Warrioress

There are a number of competitions with fab prizes scattered throughout the weekend as well as plenty of photo opportunities. There’s the SelfMadeHero cosplay competition, from the publishers of the innovative Manga Shakespeare series, with both cash and signed goodies up for grabs for the best costume and best performance, while Japanese video game publisher KOEI will also have prizes on offer for the best costume themed after one of its games, and the big cosplay event of the expo is the Cosplay Masquerade on the main stage of both days. Tickets are limited both for cosplayers and for those wishing to observe, so best get tickets (which are free) from the Cosplay Point at the start of each day to avoid disappointment.

Also new for October 2008 is the Cosplay Ball, a reserved party with live band entertainment, food and a strict dress code in the Novetel complex West of the Excel campus, with Project 37 and London’s only Japanese visual kei band SOMA – the Cosplay Ball sold out as quickly as it was announced.
