Jagex moderator fired for abusing power, stealing player currency

RuneScape developer to refund GP and items to affected accounts

An Old School RuneScape moderator has been dismissed from the company after misusing their privileges to take in-game currency (GP) and items from players.

Jagex discovered the theft during routine system checks when they noticed GP and items moving in an irregular manner and took steps to resolve the issue.

The company says that though it does not normally return stolen items in similar cases, since this case involved an internal moderator, Jagex will restore GP and items to accounts that were affected.

Police are currently involved in an investigation of the theft. Jagex was unable to provide further details, but did state that bank and card details remained uncompromised due to use of a third-party payment processor.

"We pride ourselves on the passion and integrity of the JMods that work for Jagex and we hold them to the highest standards," reads a Jagex statement. "However, we are not afraid to take tough action and make difficult decisions if someone cannot meet those standards."
