Microsoft's Gears of War has sold over three million units worldwide since release just over ten weeks ago, prompting officials from the publisher to compare the title to leading console franchises such as The Legend of Zelda and Grand Theft Auto.

Xbox Live content for the Epic-developed title has reached 1.5 million downloads, with the most recent multiplayer maps released on January 10 totalling 750,000 downloads so far.

"Like Blockbuster titles from Microsoft's Halo franchise and the Grand Theft Auto and Zelda franchises, Gears of War is tracking to be one of the best-selling videogames of all time and has established itself as the most successful new IP of the next-generation," said Jeff Bell, corporate VP of Microsoft's global marketing division.

The game was the best-selling title in the US on any platform in December, and has become the fastest selling Xbox 360 title since the console launched.
