Frontier acquires Complex Games

Update: Publisher's first studio acquisition priced at up to £11.6 million

Developer and publisher Frontier has acquired Canadian studio Complex Games for an undisclosed amount.

Complex Games is the developer behind Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters, launched via third-party label Frontier Foundry in May.

The deal marks the debut acquisition for the UK-based firm, and Fronter has said that it will "continue to explore opportunities to grow Frontier's resources."

"When we launched our third-party publishing strategy in 2019 we were excited by the potential to align our Frontier Foundry development partners more formally with Frontier through acquisition," Frontier Developments CEO Jonny Watts.

"Our experience with Complex Games on Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters has been terrific, and I am delighted to welcome Noah [Decter-Jackson, CEO] and the team to Frontier, with a view to growing and evolving our development team in Manitoba, Canada."

Back in August, former Frontier CEO David Braben stepped down, a role held since he founded the company in 1994. He still serves the firm as president and founder.

Update: Frontier has confirmed that the deal consisted of an upfront cash consideration of £8.3 million, with a potential additional £3.3 million based on company targets.
