Focus Home Interactive buys Deck13 after strong fiscal year

German studio behind the surge acquired for €7.1m as full-year revenue and profits rise

Focus Home Interactive capped a strong year financially with the acquisition of Deck13 Interactive, the German studio behind The Surge franchise.

The deal is for 100% of shares in Deck13, and is valued at €7.1 million -- €6.5 million in cash and €0.6 million in shares.

The money for the acquisition was taken from €46 million in new financing that Focus Home Interactive secured through five banks and Bpifrance Financement in february this year. The remainder of that money will also be invested in development and acquisitions.

Deck13 Interactive has a team of 60 people. It has previously worked with Focus Home Interactive on The Surge, and earned €5.5 million in revenue in calendar 2019.

In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020, Focus Home Interactive earned €143 million in revenue, up 13% over the previous year. Net profit for the period was €13 million, up 64% year-on-year.

That performance was driven by three games in particular, the French publisher said: World War Z, Greedfall, and A Plague Tale: Innocence.

Focus Home Interactive will soon announce the first information on a number of upcoming releases, including an "extremely ambitious" online co-op game with Sumo Digital, and two different games based on the Warhammer license.

It also expects to reveal four new partnerships in the coming weeks, two of which are with "renowned international studios."
