Confusion over China developer events

ChinaGDC and China GDC both set to take place in Shanghai later this year

Two developer events in China are gearing up to take place in Shanghai later this year, with some confusion emerging over exactly which one is which.

The problem stems from the similarity in names - China GDC is being run by Think Services, the company behind events in San Francisco, Vancouver and Cologne this year, while ChinaGDC is being put together by Howell Expo, the company behind the long-established ChinaJoy show.

Think Services' China event last year was cancelled, apparently due to local problems with the government, and while the company looked set for a strong return this year - the conference is still scheduled for October 11-13 - it is thought that the Chinese government would again give preference to the Howell Expo show.

China is generally seen as one of the key new frontiers in videogame development, with low staff costs combining with a relatively high number of graduates seeking employment in the sector - key Western companies such as Epic and Ubisoft already have a strong presence in the country.
