The North American HD DVD Promotion Group has notified attendees at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the scheduled press conference originally due to have taken place last night at 8:30pm local time was called off following the announcement from Warner Bros that it would be siding with Blu-ray in the next-gen DVD face-off.

"Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, we have decided to postpone our CES 2008 press conference," the statement read.

"We are currently discussing the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluating next steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD DVD's commitment to quality and affordability — a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format."

Speculation following the news, which GamesIndustry.biz originally reported last week, centres on whether or not the Warner Bros move signals a now-inevitable shift towards Blu-ray as the format of choice for next generation DVDs.

As sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 have picked up the format is building up a base of potential users on top of standalone Blu-ray players, and while Xbox 360 owners can purchase an HD DVD drive attachment, it's not thought that a significant proportion has done so yet.
