SpecialEffect raises 446,000 during One Special Day 2017

Supercell, SEGA, and Rovio among games companies contributing to fundraising effort

SpecialEffect, a charity dedicated to helping people with disabilities benefit from the therapeutic effects of video games, has announced the total amount raised from its September 2017 One Special Day fundraiser as 446,000.

For SpecialEffect's largest fundraiser of the year, dozens of game developers and publishers partnered with the charity, donating 100% of UK or worldwide sales on September 29.

The sum will go towards helping the charity's team of occupational therapists and technology specialists in their work, plus hiring two additional clinical staff. It will also go towards further developing SpecialEffect's accessible games room where people with disabilities can visit to test the range of hardware and software modifications designed by the charity.

"The money raised from One Special Day is a huge financial boost to SpecialEffect," said Dr Mick Donegan, founder and CEO of SpecialEffect. "It will enable us to take on the extra staff we need to help even more severely disabled people all over the world to play the games they love.

"Being supported by so many games industry partners like Supercell, SEGA, Seriously, Unity Technologies, Codemasters, Playdemic and Rovio is not only a tremendous funding boost but also a terrific morale boost to our passionate and dedicated team here at SpecialEffect."

The One Special Day event is set to take place again on 28 September 2018 with a significant number of the One Special Day 2017 partners already committed again this year.
