PlayStation 4 takes Sony back to its "original roots"

SCE's Andrew House says the PS4 is a return-to-form for the company

Despite all the hype and hoopla over next-generation consoles with their new features, Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House believes the PlayStation 4 is a return to a classic Sony. House told the Guardian that consumers and developers were the focus when the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 launched and that feeling has returned with the PlayStation 4.

"I see our approach on PS4 as really taking Sony Computer Entertainment back to our original roots," said House. "When we first launched with the PS1 and certainly the PS2, the goal was to give the consumer more choice, and lots of flexibility at a time when the delivery mechanism of games, on cartridges, placed a lot of restrictions on the industry. And also, by shifting to disks, to give developers - and particularly smaller ones - the chance to take risks and build a business. I think you're seeing exactly those kinds of principles applied to PS4."

It was reported that Sony dropped the Playstation 4 Eye as a pack-in to reach its $399 price. House said that while the camera provides "great consumer experiences," SCE is not "forcing that purchase on the consumer." House also mentioned the strong focus on developers, including indies, that now characterizes Sony Computer Entertainment.

"We have a new development environment, that developers are telling us is significantly easier to make great games for, and we've undertaken a significant amount of outreach to smaller developers," House said. "And the net result is that we're seeing a lot of developers coming out of the mobile space, and I think that's a tremendously positive trend for console gaming. Essentially, we have access to a whole new set of talent in gaming that we didn't have before."

I'd actually say its more like what the PS3 could have been, a lot has changed in terms of vision, tech and so on since the PS1. Its not like Sony are only just introducing choice to the market or starting multimedia in the games console, that was yesterday. PS4 should be a collection of everything learned up to this point and aspired to all those years ago. I feel that's what it is.

I didn't really follow the ps3 reveal, so would it be possible if somebody could clarify what Sony's focus was with that? Was it the whole bluray / trojan horse into the living room?

The PS3 Reveal was spectacularly similar to the XBoxOne reveal, it was being pushed as "the home of all your family entertainment needs". It had blu-ray, a hard drive tos tore pictures and videos, it could stream from your pc. It short it was sold as a living room wonder box.
Unfortunately Sony put too much emphasis on this and not the games, the "This is Living" advertising campaign featured the "concept of what PS3 could do for you" in it, and not the console or what it could do.
In short Sony showed a good amount of Hubris.

But it seems they have learned the lesson, and buckled down to sell games on a game machine again. The position 360 enjoys in the current generation.

I hope the PS4 isn't as much a hassle to use as the PS3 is. I'm not lying when I say it has more system updates than the firefox web browser, and always at the worst time too right when you've got some hot pizza and you're ready to watch a movie on Netflix.

I know this is incredibly late, but thanks for the response! I can remember actually reading an article by Henry Jenkins (it may have been the beginning of From Barbie to Mortal Kombat but I can't be too sure) where he went down to a convention in Florida prior to the release of the PS3 and all Sony and Microsoft talked about was how they were going to place anything and everything into the units to make it them the Trojan horse of the living room (which they have arguably achieved).

What I had forgotten though was all them crazy commercials. I have absolutely no idea why they seemed to think that art-house existentialism would sell a games unit
