Super Mario 3D Land boosts 3DS sales in Japan

Mario takes number one with Uncharted and Battlefield close behind

The release of Super Mario 3D Land caused 3DS sales to more than double in Japan last week.

According to data from Media Create, reported by Andriasang, Mario's long awaited arrival on the 3DS generated 343,492 sales in the seven-day period ending November 6.

The success of Super Mario 3D Land reverberated in the performance of the 3DS, which sold 145,271 units - a huge improvement of the previous week's total of 65,041.

This goes some way toward vindicating the view - voiced recently by both Nintendo and Ubisoft, among others - that the 3DS's success is contingent on the launch of compelling software.

Western games also had a strong week, with Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 entering the chart at second and third respectively. However, if sales of the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 were combined with the PlayStation 3, the total would have been enough to edge past Uncharted.

The full hardware chart is below, with last week's sales in parentheses:

  • 1. 3DS: 145,271 (65,041)
  • 2. PSP: 27,952 (30,605)

People have been complaining the 3DS doesn't have many games available and, thus, consider it to be a bad deal.

But they will remember the same thing happened with the PS3 when it was first launched. Now, it competes as equal with the Xbox.

I believe the industry will take a moment to realize the potential of the 3DS and will beging creating games for it. For people who have already played it, the tridimensional effect is amazing. I personally loved my all-time favourite with revamped graphics and in 3D: Ocarina of Time.

I believe there biggest mistake was the 250$ price and lack of games. If they start churning out GOOD games, I think 3DS will be a good sale. However Im still waiting to see if they release a 3DS with an additional analog stick. Id hate to purchase a seperate adapter for it.

@Rick - Im predicting the next iteration of the 3DS for Oct/Xmas 2012, as its been a new DS every 2 years. This would launch along-side the next Pokemon & MH4 for 3DS & possibly Metal Gear. By then, there would be 5-10 big titles that require the enhanced controls.

Reasonable sales for Mario, but this is where the next month is critical. Sunshine is the Mario I can remember "failing" in recent history (sold around 1.1m?), whereas both Mario titles on the Wii & DS sold extremely well (4-5m, and still selling). It also helps that Mario Kart arrives in a month...

Michael, Sunshine and both Mario Galaxy games in Japan sold between 900k and 1.3 million. 3D Mario games have not done as well in Japan the past few generations. NSMB Wii sold well over 4 million in Japan.

Even Super Mario 64 on DS sold just over 1.2 million in Japan. So this is a pretty good debut for being another 3D Mario game.

Japan just simply prefers their plumber with 1 less dimension.
