BioWare's end to the trilogy putting up solid numbers for EA

Mass Effect 3 is bringing in some strong retail sales for publisher Electronic Arts, who, as part of the fourth-quarter earnings announcement today, announced that BioWare's latest Mass Effect title managed to generate over $200 million in sales at retail.

The company, however, did not mention unit sales for Mass Effect 3 for either retail or digital. As of last month, the game had sold 1.3 million copies in the US.

It would appear that the outrage over Mass Effect 3's ending did not significantly harm the game's sales. BioWare tried to contain fans' furor by offering additional content for "further closure."

As someone who loved ME1, and really enjoyed ME2 - I was always going to buy ME3. And now that I have almost finished playing through ME3, I can definitely say that based on *this* play (hardcore diff, follow on from ME2 completion) the game is significantly worse/weaker than either of the previous titles.

The odds of me spending any money on future ME games has dropped significantly - especially if they are "managed" by EA. It appears to me they have done a fantastic job of destroying the franchise.

@ Michael Until the ending I MUCH preferred ME3 to either predecessor. The gameplay was tighter and more varied, the stages more open and less repetitive, and the characters more focused and developed. It also balanced the RPG elements perfectly (ME1 had too many, and they were all useless and ME2 had basically none), and added an incredibly enjoyable multiplayer. The ending is, however, awful, but I don't think EA had anything to do with that.

That's not to say I'm EA's biggest fan. They did destroy Dragon Age 2...

For me ME2 was definitely the strongest of the trilogy but there's still lots to love in ME3 -- apart from the ending. It felt like they just didn't know how to end the story. I think I would have preferred an episodic staggered release, which would have let them filter feedback into the final sections and avoid a backlash...
