College students launch game review site.
(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - MARCH 13th, 2009): In service to gamers everywhere, Algoma University's Masters of Science in Computer Games Technology students are lending their expertise and a critical eye to a new video game review website. The site is located at www.mastersgamereview.com. The site can also be found on the Youth Domain page on sootoday.com.
Each game that is reviewed is graded on a ten-point scale, with brief remarks being made on common game elements such as controls, difficulty, game-play and presentation. The heart of each review is an essay-type evaluation containing the student's impressions and experiences of playing the game.
Visitors to the site also have the ability to offer their opinions. By registering, visitors will be able to pen their own game reviews and issue ratings.
"It's an interesting and fun little side project for our Masters students to be involved with," says Nicole Muskaluk, Graduate Liaison Officer at Algoma University. "It's a chance to consider games in a different creative context than the more technical approach called for by their day-to-day studies."
Tommy Brett, MSc (CGT) Academic Coordinator at Algoma University agrees: "The MSc (CGT) course-work is programming intensive and students often have to focus on very specific tasks. It can be easy to lose sight of how those tasks get integrated into a completed game. Writing the reviews lets students consider how a game needs to function in totality and what elements contribute to its success or lack of success."
"That said, I think this program and our students' backgrounds in computer science does make them uniquely qualified to offer their opinions on different games," continues Brett. "The knowledge they have affords them more insight and the ability to offer more sophisticated analysis than a typical gaming enthusiast would."
About the MSc (CGT)
The Masters of Science in Computer Games Technology is granted from the University of Abertay Dundee in Scotland and is taught through Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada. It is taught via real-time videoconferencing and online meetings as well as labs and in class work. The degree begins in September of each year, and is only offered once per year.
